Advanced Care Paramedics Program Arrives in Simcoe County
On February 25, 2010, Simcoe County Council approved the deployment of an Advanced Care Paramedics (ACP) Program for the County of Simcoe, expanding the scope of practice of more than 50 County of Simcoe Paramedics by 2012. An additional eight ACP Preceptors (trainers) will also be added.
The Paramedics who complete the ACP training will be equipped with enhanced critical thinking and patient care skills, including airway management, fluid resuscitation, electrical therapies and the administration of cardiac, respiratory, and pain management medications. The training consists of 1,300 - 1,400 hours of classroom, clinical and field setting instruction.
"The arrival of ACPs in Simcoe County will have a profound effect on our communities," said Andrew Robert, Director and Chief of the County of Simcoe Paramedic Services. "Whether they are performing advanced airway management (as such intubation), or administering medications to address critical cardiac or respiratory conditions, ACPs will provide enhanced patient assessment, treatment and transportation options available to patients. Furthermore, this is an excellent augmentation to a very skilled foundation of Primary Care Paramedics (PCP) currently practicing in the County of Simcoe."
There will be up to 12 ACPs on the road in Simcoe County of the end of 2010.
